Swedish Medical Center Bed Control Coordinator in Edmonds, Washington


Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Bed Control Coordinator (Per Diem, Variable) to work in Nursing Support Services at Swedish Edmonds in Edmonds, WA.

The Bed Control Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the bed management function for admissions, transfers and discharges at Stevens Hospital. This is a clerical position working collaboratively and closely with the Nursing Supervisor. Discretion and decision making is required within the scope of the position’s responsibilities.

In this position you will:

  • Receive request for patient admission to hospital, patient internal transfers and notification of discharge through telephone, fax or electronic media. Communicates back to requesting facility with bed assignments and admission approval.

  • Assures accuracy in assigning and tracking the correct patient, physician and service type on each admission.

  • Obtains accurate demographic and insurance information. Adheres to all managed care procedures, as applicable, to ensure prior authorization of services is secured.

  • Coordinates and collaborates with Nursing Supervisor on all patient admits, transfers and discharges.

  • Communicates on an ongoing basis with housekeeping and/or housekeeping supervisors to ensure bed turnover is accomplished timely in order to maintain a limited wait time for a clean room. Collaborates routinely with the Patient Access and Case Management Departments.

  • Obtains Surgery schedule information and assigns appropriate beds in collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor.

  • Maintains open communication by responding to needed requests and providing pertinent information to nursing units, physicians, ancillary departments, and other areas of the hospital in order to assist in execution of department processes, ensure accurate coordination of services and patient placement.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, insurance plans, computer applications and organizational policies and procedures related to the admission process.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work as a team player, detail oriented.

  • Ability to set priorities in dealing with multiple demands and interruptions.

  • Ability to obtain necessary demographic and insurance information from providers, physician offices and clinics.

  • Knowledge of managed care procedures.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Prior hospital or medical experience in admitting and/ or patient registration.
