Swedish Health Services Speech and Language Pathologist - Inpatient and Outpatient - Edmonds in Edmonds, Washington


Swedish Medical Center is looking for an Speech and Language Pathologist (0.0 FTE, Days) to work in Inpatient and Outpatient Speech Therapy at Swedish Edmonds in Edmonds, WA.

Delivers speech language therapy services to predominantly adult inpatients and outpatients, and to select pediatric/adolescents. Provides indirect clinical guidance to staff, students and volunteers in the areas of communication, cognition, and swallowing by identifying patient needs and developing responsive programs. Upon physician referral, performs evaluations and develops and implements individual plans of care to maximize functional outcomes, reassessing treatment results, and actively participating in discharge planning. Strives to increase public awareness of communication and swallowing disorders by providing community and hospital staff education. Delivers all services in compliance with Swedish Medical Center standards, national and professional standards, state practice acts, and current accepted evidence-based practice.

In this position you will:

  • Provide quality patient care for inpatients and outpatients by: performing a functional assessment and evaluation of patients in various age groups including adult and/or geriatric and select adolescent and pediatric patients who are on referral; developing a treatment plan based on evaluation with participation of patient and family as appropriate; establishing measurable goals described in functional terms which include time frames for achievement; administering treatment, based on established plan or goals, and assessing patient's progress and results of treatment on a timely basis and revising plans or goals as appropriate.

  • Communicate effectively regarding patient's progress or concerns both verbally and in writing with physician, patient, family, other hospital personnel and community agencies to facilitate the assessment of patient's achievement of goals and to estimate further rehab potential on a timely basis.

  • Oversee all treatment provided by Speech-Language Pathology externs in accordance with ASHA standards of practice and hospital policy. Provide orientation, training, guidance, direction and feedback and/or evaluate their performance as required. Help ensure the consistent and thorough orientation of new employees, agency personnel, student observers and volunteers by actively participating in their orientation.

  • Maintain all required and necessary documentation in the medical record to promote continuity of care between caregivers and meet JCAHO, hospital, payer and quality of care standards.

  • Provide instruction and education to patients, their families (or significant others) and the community in order to enhance the knowledge, skills and behaviors, which are necessary for them to benefit fully from health care interventions and to meet their ongoing health care needs.

  • Continuously improve patient care delivery and enhance own professional development by attending appropriate continuing education presentations, in services, staff meetings and participating in performance improvement processes and program development.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree Accredited Speech-Language Pathology program

  • 1 year of hospital-wide experience with speech, language, and cognitive communication disorders and dysphagia

  • Diagnostic experience with MBS procedures

  • Experience with MBS procedures

  • Possesses valid Washington state Speech-Language Pathologist license

  • Current Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA
