Swedish Health Services Patient Care Technician - Recovery in Issaquah, Washington

Description:

Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Patient Care Technician (1.0 FTE, Evening SHIFT) to work in the Recovery department at Swedish Issaquah in Issaquah, WA.

This position functions as a collaborative and participative member of an interdisciplinary team, consistent with the mission, vision and values of the Interventional platform at Issaquah Hospital and Swedish Medical Center. All functions are under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse throughout Perioperative and Interventional Services.

In this position you will:

  • General, Customer Service and Communication:Works with patients, families, visitors, and physicians to identify needs, resolve problems or provide other information. Demonstrates flexibility to meet patient care goals. Maintains patient right to privacy. Respects the rights of the patient, family and other caregivers. Handles all patient information as confidential and per HIPPA guidelines. Communicates appropriate and relevant information and feedback clearly to the appropriate person. Recognizes and communicates the need for assistance with assigned workloads. Seeks help with problem solving when needed. Exhibits the ability to effectively work with coworkers, supervisors, management, and customers. Arranges for interpreter services as needed. Provides appropriate assistance in the orientation and training of new employees. Establishes annual goals in concert with manager for growth and development. Actively participates in unit, department, and system-wide educational activities. Maintains annual staff education requirement. Performs other duties as assigned to insure effectiveness of care delivery and unit function.

  • New Admissions, Transfer, Discharge and Documentation Activities Including Electronic Medical Record:Prepares a paper chart and prints stickers from electronic medical record for patients as needed. Sends discharge medication orders to pharmacy as applicable by campus. Communicates patient arrival to unit to appropriate departments and individuals. Maintains accurate and timely log of patient admissions. Maintains unit statistics and quality control logs as assigned. Performs all ADT (admission, discharge and transfer) functions: reviews, audits and compares for accuracy. Ensures accommodation codes are correct. Manages status board. Reviews orders for upcoming tests, procedures and communicates priority to nursing staff. Makes minor changes as needed i.e. unit collect vs. lab collect to orders. Checks pended and signed/held orders. Ensures downtime computer is on and checklists are complete. Enters non-medication verbal orders during a “Code Blue” or other emergencies. Use computer, telephone or requisition to enter physician orders, diagnostic tests or other procedures. May act as a resource for the EMR for staff and physicians. Is able to function as a CPOE EPIC Super-User.

  • Other Duties:Distributes mail. Sends patient reports to HIM upon discharge. Inventories education brochures and office supplies, and orders as appropriate. Orders supplies from MSC, Nutrition, etc. as necessary.

  • Environment of Care and Regulatory Readiness:Rounds the unit in accordance with department regulatory standards i.e. keeps hallways clear, equipment plugged in. Keep work area clean and clutter free.

  • Activities in support of and providing direct patient care:• Works under supervision of the RN to provide care and service within scope of practice to patients and their families. Receives direction from the RN for delegation of tasks. Adheres to emergency policies and procedures associated with patient care.• Collaborates with nurse and other team members to organize, prioritize and assist with functions necessary for patient admission, care delivery and discharge. Assists with patient admission, discharge, transfer and associated documentation as appropriate to the unit. Appropriately communicates and documents all daily activities and care provided to patient. Communicates and documents unusual and complex issues and changes in patient condition in a timely manner. Communicates and documents such actions accurately and legibly.• Facilitates patient movement within and to other departments and discharge destinations using wheelchair, stretcher, or bed as appropriate. Assists with positioning patients and demonstrates position specific age related competencies. Performs transport duties in a courteous, polite and professional manner within prescribed time constraints.• Provides patient assistance as appropriate. Answers call lights, alarms and phone calls. Responds appropriately and timely to unit and patient alarms.• Assists in the care of patients before and after procedures. Clips and preps patients. Assists MD/RN with arterial and venous sheath removal. Reports any change in patient condition directly to the RN. Applies pressure dressing under direction of RN.• Responsible for restocking and charging of supplies after use, maintains appropriate core stocking levels, works with manager or designee to improve unit and individual routines to assure adequate room supply without excess or depletion. Notifies nurse manager and/or designee and makes recommendation for par level adjustments in assigned areas.• Follows established guidelines in emergency situations, infection control and all quality and safety issues. Receives direction from managers or designee or patient care providers.• Performs patient bay and procedure room turnover, maintains cleanliness of the patient care and procedural areas, equipment and patient transportation devices as indicated by department procedure.• Demonstrates basic knowledge of sterile technique and infection control. Assists the surgical team with the set up and preparation of the surgical suite and opening of sterile items to the surgical field. Assists with obtaining and the return of instruments, equipment and supplies. Assists with transportation of specimens and equipment to the appropriate department.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience must include one of the following:• Six months of non-acute clinical care experience.• One year of skilled nursing experience.• Non-acute clinical care or skilled experience will be waived if the applicant has demonstrated experience involving customer service in healthcare or other related industry and completion of an acute care NAC course.• Non-acute clinical care or skilled experience will be waived for students currently enrolled and in good standing at a traditional registered nursing program approved by the Nursing Quality Care Commission. At a minimum, satisfactory completion of one academic term (quarter or semester) that included clinical patient care experience is required.

  • Current Washington State certification as a Nursing Assistant Certified.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required at time of hire from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).

  • Washington State Medical Assistant - Registered will be required with Swedish Medical Center facility application completed within 7 days of hire. Must obtain active license within 60 days of hire. Employee will not be authorized to practice independently for Point of Care until registration is obtained.
