Performs a variety of technical procedures that required independent judgment, conducts and performs MRI examinations, and assumes responsibility for designated areas or procedures as described or required.

The Senior Medical Assistant licensed provides support and clinic coordination of multiple patient care services on multiple campuses, exercising independence in the planning and accomplishment of a wide spectrum of clerical duties. Responsibilities include: scheduling of new patients, follow-up clinic appointments, subsequent treatments, and requested diagnostic tests, acquiring of insurance verifications, referrals and authorizations, preparing and maintaining the patient's medical record, reconciling billing issues, answering multiple phone lines and triaging phone calls.

+ Greet and prepare patients for the practitioner. Obtain and record vital signs and other appropriate information, such as height, weight, drug allergies, current medications and presenting problem.
+ Schedules multiple, sequential procedures and diagnostic tests as directed by the physician. Makes schedule adjustments as necessitated by the patient’s condition.
+ Coordinates clinic schedule to optimize physician clinic and procedure availability on multiple campuses.
+ May draw blood, perform laboratory tests; assist in diagnostic tests and clinical procedures to appropriate level of training as established in procedures.
+ Obtains non-invasive body fluid specimens.
+ Under the supervision of the practitioner, administers approved medications via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular or intradermal routes.
+ Under the supervision of the practitioner, informs patient of lab results, calls in prescriptions to pharmacies, and returns practitioners phone messages. Documents all interactions in the patient’s medical record.
+ Uses SMC and SCI computer systems efficiently and effectively. Able to learn new computer applications as they evolve.
+ Schedules outside clinic appointments, diagnostic tests, non-invasive procedures, and surgical procedures. Coordinates with other departments involved in patient appointments and care, such as transportation and interpreter services.
+ Contacts patients regarding appointments or changes in appointments, as needed. May perform discharge follow-up phone calls, as necessary.
+ Schedules inpatient admissions when requested.
+ Acts as a courier between various departments for delivery and pick-up of confidential patient material.
+ Completes initial prospectus on newly referred patients and distributes to the appropriate individuals. Obtains pertinent records/films in preparation for first visit, and scans them appropriately.
+ Registers and consents patients, ensuring the completion of required forms, if necessary, at clinic site. Collects insurance co-pays as required by clinic site.
+ Requests patient records as needed and scans them in a timely manner to the electronic medical record.
+ Prepares, cleans and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment; keeps patient exam rooms clean orderly and stocked; disposes of contaminated items according to Swedish Medical Center Exposure Control Plan; anticipates practitioner’s need for medications, supplies, and equipment and plans accordingly.
+ Supports office flow by distributing clinic mail and faxes to appropriate individuals and maintaining inventory of office and other supplies. Assures maintenance of office equipment.
+ Documents complete and accurate information as appropriate in the electronic medical record. Scans patient medical records into chart.
+ Answers multiple practice phone lines and triages calls demonstrating, a) decision-making ability regarding appropriate routing of calls, b) ability to manage other multiple interruptions, and c) ability to maintain a helpful and responsive demeanor.
+ Uses paging systems effectively: initiates pages for staff and notifies appropriate staff when page/call is returned.
+ Accurately communicates pertinent patient information assuring safe patient care outcomes to appropriate caregiver.
+ Acts as a patient advocate in appropriate clinic functions.
+ Assists in problem solving around patient flow issues (e.g. wait time concerns).
+ Identifies special needs of patients (e.g. need for interpreter, too ill to wait at front desk) and communicates appropriately to unit staff.
+ Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of the New Patient process at the SCI. Exhibits exceptional compassion and sensitivity unique to the oncology patient and the Oncology experience. Provides patient and family with information on support services offered at the SCI.
+ Verifies patient insurance coverage utilizing computer applications and documenting same on prospectus. Obtains referrals/authorizations for services per insurance requirements.
+ Assists in resolving billing issues for patients and/or directs patients to the appropriate personnel. Reconciles charge tickets against current schedule on a daily basis as directed by the clinic administrator.
+ Rectifies any charge discrepancies, if required at clinic site.
+ Completes data spreadsheets in a timely manner, if required at clinic site.
+ Functions as an essential member of the Swedish Cancer Institute team.
+ Accepts responsibility for all aspects of the position. Establishes and adjusts priorities based on patient acuity and changing clinical situations.
+ Organizes work to perform multiple functions concurrently, demonstrating ability to respond appropriately to multiple requests from staff, patients, physicians, etc.
+ Recognizes and responds to patient, facility, and environmental emergencies. Acts as a resource during emergencies.

+ Assumes the role of patient advocate to clarify and evaluate ethical and/or legal issues, and supports cultural practices.
+ Demonstrates clinical competence by assisting with patient care in order to maintain clinical skills. Spend time on all shifts to assess care and to coach, develop, evaluate and advocate for staff.
+ Responsible for operating and capital budgetary performance. Develops annual budget and capital requests in conjunction with care partners.
+ Hires high quality staff and responsible for all personnel management practices including effective/efficient deployment of staff. Understands applicable Swedish policies and Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements.
+ Successfully plans for future needs, consistently demonstrates sound change management skills. Demonstrates the ability to effectively relay information from senior leaders to staff and vice versa. Engages staff in developing/implementing department vision.
+ Establishes effective working relationships with local team members and peers/matrix colleagues throughout Swedish.
+ Collaborates with the staff, clinical nurse specialist and/or clinical educator to identify, plan, and implement an educational program pertinent to the service and for all level of staff.
+ Hears and adjusts up to step-two grievances.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's Degree: From an accredited school of nursing.
