Research/Technology/Innovation & Awards

Leading the way in new directions.

At Swedish, we see a future rich in possibilities. New treatments, new technology, new ways of changing lives. We're dedicated to leading the way in medical research, and we're pioneers in the development of healing technologies, all in the service of the people that look to us for care. You're invited to learn more about this vital work at Swedish.

Medical Research

When it comes to the delivery of high quality health care, Swedish is raising the bar. We're involved in extensive research across a wide array of areas, including cancer, heart, headache, HIV/AIDS, organ transplant, perinatal, pediatrics, neurology, pain and rheumatology. The Swedish Research Center supports and administers research activities throughout our five campus locations, participating in major federally funded programs as well as new treatment approaches. We employ numerous research coordinators, scientists, interviewers, research nurses, and others, and at any given time, we are conducting more than 600 research studies.

We are one of the leading clinical trial sites in the western United States for cancer research, and our Heart & Vascular Institute is meeting the needs of patients and physicians with the latest drug and device studies, as well as new options for treating cardiac and vascular disease. Our Neuroscience Institute is at the forefront of clinical care and nearly all of our physicians in this group perform clinical research to test the safety and effectiveness of new drugs and medical devices for diseases of the nervous system.

Healthcare Technology

Swedish is home to some of the most cutting-edge treatment and technology available in health care today. From the world's most advanced mobile mammography center to an advanced brain tumor treatment center with an onsite laboratory capable of analyzing DNA extracted during surgery and custom-tailoring treatment options, Swedish is redefining the boundaries of traditional medicine.

The Robotic-Assisted Surgical Program at Swedish continues to grow and gain momentum. Already the most comprehensive program of its kind in the region, we've expanded our robotic-assisted surgery offerings to include bariatric, ear-nose-and-throat, colorectal, and general surgery cases, including colon and pancreatic cancer.

In addition to the growing number of surgical specialties being performed with robotic-assisted technology, many of our surgeons are on the forefront of education and research in their respective specialties. The Swedish robotics program is the first in the Northwest to add a new virtual-reality training simulator to help surgeons practice on the robot.
