Swedish Health Services Coding Auditor and Education Specialist - REMOTE in Seattle, Washington

Swedish Medical Center is looking for a REMOTE Coding Auditor and Education Specialist (1.0 FTE, Day Shift) to work for the Coding and Abstracting team, based in Seattle, WA.

SCHEDULE: Fully Remote position; M-F. Availability needed during standard business hours (8a-6p PST). Shift times are flexible as long as workload is managed appropriately. Applicants DO NOT need to reside in WA state to be considered for employment.

Responsible for monitoring and overseeing the coding integrity program across multiple Swedish Campuses. Assesses, develops resources/materials, and conducts training to assure accurate coding of HIM coded medical records. Serves as a coding expert, working with the Coding Supervisor/Manager and the Clinical Documentation Improvement Program (CDIP) Data Integrity Liaison to ensure compliance with Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, coding conventions and regulatory oversight agencies. Develops competencies and quality assessment tools for education/compliance requirements. Responsible for developing and maintaining SMC coding guidelines for new and existing employees. Reviews and revises departmental policies and provides education to coding staff regarding changes. Identifies areas for documentation improvement and provides feedback to management and administration with SMC. Serves as Epic super-user and recommends system modifications to improve the organization's coding functions. Develops and revises educational objectives and curriculum applicable to all Epic coding processes.

In this position you will:

  • Performs random and focused reviews of HIM coded medical records. Review records for coding accuracy and completeness, accuracy of discharge disposition and present on admission indicators.

  • Communicates findings of reviews to coders. Makes final determination regarding changes to records where coder does not agree with findings and assumes responsibility for these records. Keeps coding manager and supervisor apprised of progress of reviews and findings.

  • Produces reports to be presented to administration and compliance demonstrating departmental compliance with quality standards and identifying areas for improvement.

  • Responds and tracks requests for DRG changes from third party payers per procedure. Provides feedback to coder as needed.

  • Facilitates overall department quality standard of 95% as measured by outside annual audits.

  • Develops training materials, orients and trains new coders, reviewing 100% of records until quality standards are met.

  • Recommends topics for in-services based on audit results to manager. Prepares and presents educational material at coding meetings or training sessions.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • TWO-year college degree, related to health administration/coding/education. Will consider applicants with relevant experience and applicable education.

  • Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required

  • 5 years performing hospital based inpatient coding required, utilizing the most current versions of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedure Terminology (CPT).

  • Experience training and/or teaching in acute care hospital setting.

  • Experience implementing and improving upon a new program.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree Or equivalent educ/experience related to health administration/coding/education.

  • Working with management of the Quality Department, Clinical Documentation Improvement Programs, and other key stakeholders.

  • Experience using Epic and 3M.

  • AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer preferred.
