Swedish Health Services Coding Specialist - Aco Support in Seattle, Washington


Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Coding Specialist ( 1 FTE, Day SHIFT) to work in the Aco Support in Seattle, WA.

The Coding Specialist is a functional member of Central Business Services at SMG. The Specialist is an entry-level coding professional who is responsible for the timely, accurate, and comprehensive review of provider claims to optimize reimbursement and ensure compliance with all regulatory statutes. This position also works with the department to identify trends and educational opportunities for providers to ensure proper coding, documentation, and accuracy of billing within their areas of responsibility/specialty.

In this position you will:

  • Ensures coding compliance by applying all coding principles and guidelines as defined in the CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding, American Academy of Professional Coders, Swedish Medical Group, and other governing agencies

  • Reviews insurance carrier payment denials, recommends appropriate billing corrections, and provide training to clinic and corporate business personnel.

  • Participate in review of Senior Billing Specialists’ claims; assist in developing procedures for claims review.

  • Act as a resource to the Senior Billing Specialists and other CBS and clinical staff members.

  • Conducts coding training sessions when necessary.

  • Triage difficult reimbursement issues to the consultants or manager for review and follow-up.

  • Updates coding tools such as fee tickets annually to ensure the most current codes are utilized.

  • Works closely with the department to assist in developing policies, procedures, process improvements and workflows.

  • Some presentation/speaking/teaching skills.

  • Keeps coding knowledge and skills current through attending continuing education activities and reviewing pertinent literature, and attending other educational forums.

  • Daily interaction with team members is required.

  • Completion of Special Projects as needed.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years ICD-9-CM and CPT coding experience performing clinic and hospital based inpatient and outpatient coding for professional billing.

  • RHIA or RHIT credentials will also be considered if applicant has at least 2 years of current coding experience

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills required.

Preffered qualifications for this position include:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent technical school completion of a certified coding program and 2 to 3 years related coding experience. Will consider applicants with relevant education and/or experience.

  • Some presentation/speaking skills are preferred.
