Swedish Medical Center Coding Specialist - Central Business Office in Seattle, Washington
Swedish Medical Center is lookingfor a Coding Specialist (1.0 FTE, Days) to work in the Central Business Services inSeattle, WA.
The Coding Specialist is a functional member ofCentral Business Services at SMG. The Specialist is an entry-level codingprofessional who is responsible for the timely, accurate, and comprehensivereview of provider claims to optimize reimbursement and ensure compliance with allregulatory statutes. Thisposition also works with the department to identify trends and educationalopportunities for providers to ensure proper coding, documentation, andaccuracy of billing within their areas of responsibility/specialty.
In this position you will:
Ensurescoding compliance by applying all coding principles and guidelines as definedin the CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, AHIMA Standards ofEthical Coding, American Academy of Professional Coders, Swedish Medical Group,and other governing agencies
Reviewsinsurance carrier payment denials, recommends appropriate billing corrections,and provide training to clinic and corporate business personnel.
Participatein review of Senior Billing Specialists’ claims; assist in developingprocedures for claims review.
Actas a resource to the Senior Billing Specialists and other CBS and clinicalstaff members.
Conductscoding training sessions when necessary.
Triagedifficult reimbursement issues to the consultants or manager for review andfollow-up.
Updatescoding tools such as fee tickets annually to ensure the most current codes areutilized.
Worksclosely with the department to assist in developing policies, procedures,process improvements and workflows.
Keepscoding knowledge and skills current through attending continuing educationactivities and reviewing pertinent literature, and attending other educationalforums.
Dailyinteraction with team members is required.
Completionof Special Projects as needed.
Required qualifications for thisposition include:
Prefer anAssociate’s Degree or equivalent technical school completion of a certifiedcoding program and 2 to 3 years related coding experience.Will consider applicants with relevanteducation and/or experience.
Certified CodingSpecialist - AHIMA (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder - AAPC (CPC)preferred. RHIA or RHIT credentials will also be considered. If applicant hasno coding certification, CPC certification must be obtained within 12 months ofhire.
2 to 3 years ICD-9-CM and CPT coding experienceperforming clinic and hospital based inpatient and outpatient coding forprofessional billing.
Demonstrated ability to code accurately and applycoding guidelines and conventions on all cases.
Knowledge of healthcare billing and reimbursementincluding industry standard billing rules, Medicare, Medicaid, L&I, andcommercial insurance.
Performswell on coding assessment and is able to explain rationale for assignment ofcodes.
Knowledgeof coding principles. Ability to identify and solicit documentation to code thecomplete clinical picture based on knowledge of disease processes, clinicaljudgment, and interaction with medical staff.
Knowledgeof anatomy and physiology, medical science, and medical terminology.
Abilityto develop and maintain good working relationships with peers, physicians, andother staff members.
Abilityto share coding knowledge with peers and other disciplines throughout theorganization.
Strong analytical, problem solving andcommunication skills required.
Ability to work in a high volume environmentwhile maintaining high quality standards.
Demonstrated literacy in the use of personalcomputers and Windows applications required. Excellent written/oralcommunication, ability to manage, set priorities, and operate with minimaldirect supervision.
Some presentation/speaking skills arepreferred.
