Swedish Health Services Executive Director, Cancer Institute in Seattle, Washington
collaboration with the Executive Medical Director of the Cancer Institute, this strategic leader is
responsible for the leadership and management of the Cancer Institute through
the development and implementation of management and patient care systems to
assure cost effective, high quality, coordinated, patient focused care. The
Executive Director builds relationships resulting in compassionate and
committed teams within the Cancer Institute and stakeholders and with respect
to Swedish Core Values. The position is an integral part of the Leadership team
of the Cancer Institute and within the Swedish system. The Executive Director
will collaborate with other leaders to achieve outcomes for the whole
organization and make decisions effecting strategy, implementation and
management of resources in addition to the following functions:
Transform Delivery of ClinicalCare –
Develop and implement program strategies that will provide an exceptional
patient-centered experience by developing a seamless care delivery system and
innovative care models to improve quality outcomes, reduce unnecessary clinical
variation, improve coordination across the continuum, and expand clonal trials
Create Enduring Alignment withPhysicians, Researchers, and Clinicians – Create internal and external provider
alignment strategies that strengthen seamless and innovative care delivery, in
hopes of achieving the Triple Aim: Improved Quality, Affordability, and
Thrive Under New ReimbursementModels –
Collaborate with Finance and Managed Care to develop program strategies and
partner with payers, purchasers and providers to develop reimbursement models
that advance seamless and innovative care delivery by rewarding quality, care
coordination and value.
Enhance Access By ImprovingAffordability –
Develop and implement program strategies to enhance access to care and improve
health care affordability by providing value-based care across the continuum
and reducing overall administrative and care delivery expenses.
Grow to Meet Community Needs – Create and implement strategies
to serve more people throughout the cancer care continuum of care via
appropriate growth and development of program services in existing and new
Develop and successfully implement a Regional Oncology StrategicPlan including facility and market-specific growth plans, capitalplanning, and resource allocation across the continuum, in collaborationwith Regional, physician leadership, and other key stakeholders.
Develop and implement a physician alignment and growth strategyacross the Region for Oncology services, including medical foundations,medical groups, IPAs, and independent practices.
Develop and oversee the Oncology program’s operating and capitalbudgets across the Region.
Develop and maintain a balanced scorecard to monitor and measurekey program goals and outcomes, including Quadruple Aim goals, programgrowth, physician alignment and growth, and other goals that may beestablished.
Assess market and determine the areas of opportunity/threat withinthe program. Based on analysis, develop recommendations for program andservices development for expansion.
Evaluate Oncology programs and services across the continuum.Identify gaps and develop a plan to fill these gaps through developing newprograms or collaborating with other organizations.
Collaborate effectively across programs, hospitals and with allclinical and business divisions, develop and/or enhance programs andservice delivery within a coordinated way to best serve patients and thecommunity.
Be responsible for the development and/or implementation ofevidence-based, best practice clinical protocols across the Region, incollaboration with Regional and System collaboratives, improve healthoutcomes across the continuum. Work with key administrative and physicianleaders to gain consensus. All to provide appropriate support forimplementation in conjunction with key stakeholders.
Collaborate with Finance to develop pricing strategies. Defineexpectations for price point and determination of appropriate cost ofservice through analysis of input costs, standardization, evidence-basedprotocols, delivery in lower cost settings, etc.
Collaborate with Finance and Managed Care to develop financingmodels to connect program strategies in support of affordability, highquality and coordination of care (e.g., bundled payments).
Collaborate with physician groups in the development andimplementation of a Patient-Centered Medical Home Model of care foroncology patients.
Collaborate with clinical operations to assure the effective andefficient delivery of services including patient satisfaction, physiciansatisfaction, quality, workforce planning, and standardization.
Be responsible for the development of clinical services in eachSwedish facility in coordination with the Chief Executive. Define clinicalservices based on market and data analysis, identify the greatestopportunity, and recommend the appropriate infrastructure required tosupport new services and/or models of care.
Develop and coordinate program strategies for delivery of outreachservices, including telehealth.
Represent the program as a government, business and communityliaison.
Represent services lines/programs on key System, Region, andFacility committees to formulate strategies and tactics to achieveclinical performance improvement in health care delivery.
Partner with key physician leaders to maintain strong,collaborative relationships across the continuum while developing growthand succession plans.
Responsible for specialty physician and clinical recruitment toachieve key strategic objectives.
Create and engage high performing teams around key initiativeswithout direct line authority for implementation staff. Gain trust andbuild strong relationships across the continuum of responsibility andauthority.
Establish priorities for program marketing development and outreachdesigned to support growth.
Develop and implement research strategies within program, monitorfinancial and scientific outcomes.
Identify strategic philanthropic priorities and partner withFoundations to achieve targeted goals.
Negotiate and maintain directorship, consultant and other physicianagreements.
Assure that all regulatory requirements for the cancer program are withincompliance.
Professional experience/educations for this position include:
Ten years of progressive management experience in healthcare,preferably with in-depth knowledge specific to clinical program areasacross the continuum.
Experience in an innovative, multi-site regionally integratedhealth system.
Physician and medical group alignment and integration experience.
Significant experience in leading teams, group facilitation,project management, and building management systems.
Demonstrated experience and success developing and implementinginnovative clinical program growth strategies, physician and payeralignment, and consumer engagement models in a highly competitive andcomplex market environment.
Experience with building clinical programs across the continuum ofcare, including ambulatory, acute and post-acute care, medical group, homeand community-based sites.
A proven ability to be a team player with strong interpersonal andcommunication skills; to track records of developing collaborative and effectiveworking relationships with physicians, clinicians, management, colleaguesand peers; All this, with the ability to motivate, lead and influenceothers to implement key strategies.
Knowledge and understanding of emerging health care, market andtechnology trends, including forces influencing the growth, utilizationand delivery of cancer services.
Leadership skills including ability to prioritize and organizework; flexibility and agility to process information and adapt quickly toa changing healthcare environment; create goals and accountability; leadprojects from concept to implementation in a timely manner; and achieveresults.
Demonstrated experience with creating a culture of excellence,including quality and service improvement.
Strong customer focus with physicians, management, colleagues,internal and external stakeholders.
Financial management skills including healthcare budgeting andfinancing, pricing, revenue optimization, reimbursement and paymentmodels, and cost management.
Familiarity with business intelligence tools including benchmarkingbest practices, data tracking and monitoring outcomes; experiencedeveloping and implementing balanced scorecards.
Skills in change management, Six Sigma, LEAN and/or othercontinuous performance improvement techniques.
An ability to understand and be comfortable in a complexmatrix structured organization.

The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) is a large clinical
research based practice engaging with over 300 Swedish employed physicians,
community physicians and other clinicians and scientists across the State of
Washington and beyond. Services include a comprehensive array of cancer research
and care services from diagnostic testing and treatment, to managing symptoms
and side effects, to providing follow-up services and home care support.
Swedish has been a Seattle-area leader in innovative cancer diagnosis,
treatment and recovery since 1932. Services include biological therapy, genetic
counseling and testing, chemotherapy, cancer surgery, gamma knife radiosurgery,
hormone therapy, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion, radiation
therapy, stem cell transplant, vaccine therapy and personalized medicine.
Services are provided across the Puget Sound region with
full service cancer programs on three major campuses (Swedish First Hill,
Swedish Issaquah, and Swedish Edmonds). Additional cancer services are provided
at Swedish Cherry Hill and Swedish Ballard.
The clinical services are state-of-the art and the clinical
protocols are supported by a robust clinical trials and research function.
Along with its Providence and other partners, the SCI holds a National Cancer
Institute Community Oncology Research Program grant providing access to
clinical research trials through 40 regional partners in Idaho, Oregon and
Washington. Additionally, SCI provides investigator initiated and Pharma trials
to patients in in their Reid Family Innovative Therapeutics and Research Unit.
Annual new cancer patient volumes exceed 8,000 cases with
