Swedish Health Services Medical Interpreter I in Seattle, Washington
Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Medical Interpreter I Spanish Speaking (1.0 FTE, Day Shift) to work in Linguistic Services at Swedish Shared Services in Seattle, WA.
Provides accurate and impartial on-site spoken language interpretation services requiring advanced proficiency in oral and written English and one foreign language or language dialect with preference for native or near native fluency in the language of interpreting. Fluent English pronunciation is required. Professional level medical interpreting and knowledge of medical vocabulary to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and SMC medical personnel to ensure linguistically appropriate care. Acts as a cultural broker and patient advocate as directed in addition to assisting LEP patients to access a full range of Swedish services. Informs providers and patients of relevant cultural issues to assist in delivering culturally competent care. Language services include spoken language interpretation (in person, telephone or VRI [video remote interpretation]), sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, short translation of written material (approximately 50 words or less) and peer review of translation projects as needed. Maintains and updates personal calendar of assignments through computer and Smartphone in a timely manner and places patient reminder calls and assists with rescheduling and canceling patient appointments as needed. Communicates potential interpretation issues/concerns to provider(s) and Manager. Seeks evaluation, certification and additional training in interpreting, health care practices and beliefs, and cultural competency.
In this position you will:
Provides interpretation (in person, by telephone or video remote) for LEP patients and SMC medical providers and personnel. Provides Video Remote and telephonic interpretation in a call center environment.
Assists in proofreading of translation projects as needed. Translates short content (approximately 50 words or less) such as for discharge information or translation of pharmacy labels from English to target language.
Helps patients to fill out medical and other forms. Provides sight translation (accurate rendition of a written text in one language to an oral message in another language) of short text (50 words or less) in the presence of provider and/or other medical staff.
Facilitates cross-cultural communication through expert explanation and clarification of culture of patient population to ensure culturally appropriate care. Assesses patients’ interpretation needs. Encourages direct communication between patient and provider or staff.
Assists LEP patients in accessing services and informs them about SMC policies and procedures. Appropriately directs and guides patients to SMC departments and campuses. Assist limited English proficiency (LEP) patients to access a full range of services available while helping patients to navigate the health care system.
Reports no-shows and cancellations promptly to Linguistic Services scheduling department so as to be available to take timely alternative assignments.
Problem-solves interpreter and translation issues with SMC providers and personnel. Participates in department and organizational quality improvement efforts.
Adheres to Interpreter Code of Ethics and follows the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care Standards of Practice.
Adheres to confidentiality guidelines outlined under HIPAA. Promotes and protects general safety for patients/families/co-workers through application of SMC safety standards.
Confirms patient appointments with patient and SMC units prior to appointments as directed. Completes patient reminder calls in a timely manner and notifies SMC clinics and Linguistic Services Scheduling department of any patient cancellations or scheduling issues.
Demonstrates service excellence through patient-centered care and a culture of respect for each individual.
Works with Scheduler to schedule appointments. Follows department protocol for patient/provider cancellations and for prompting provider for end of session. Notifies schedulers of any emergent needs for immediate resolution. Completes assignments on time and informs supervisor of any potential deadline delays.
Maintains/improves knowledge and skills related to medical interpreting, medical terminology, SMC policies/procedures, SMC services, use of work equipment and supplies; completes learning modules and attends department educational sessions and meetings. Maintains current certification or equivalent by obtaining required continuing education and competency training.
Assists with educating SMC personnel on procedures for access to and use of interpreters as well as effective communication protocol, as appropriate.
Support development of department and organizational efficiency and effectiveness through contribution of personal expertise, demonstrated support for department and organizational initiatives and policies, participation in problem-solving and continuous process improvement activities.
Performs other duties and/or office tasks as assigned, which may include scheduling assistance, special projects, or staff training..
Promotes team building within department and supports development of inter-departmental relationships and effective communication.
Addresses, coordinates or refers all patient issues and concerns appropriately for resolution. Escalates issues appropriately to supervisor.
Maintains an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships in department and the organization. Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation. Adheres to hospital policies on customer service and excellent patient experience.
Arrives on time for all assignments, provides service for duration of appointments, meets deadlines and works independently.
Maintains complete and accurate written records of services rendered. Keeps accurate statistical data of interpreter encounters by documenting into an electronic format for statistical purposes.
Required qualifications for this postion include:
1 year of Interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting.
Certification or screening assessment by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) as a Medical Interpreter, or equivalent (Other U.S. state or national medical interpreter certification, CCHI, NBCMI, MITI test, Language Line Medical Interpreter Skills & Language Assessment, or completion of equivalent evaluation process determined to be acceptable by the Linguistic Services Manager), required.
Renewal of certification or equivalent required by expiration date.
Preferred qualifications for this postion include:
Continuing education and/or training preferred in medical interpretation competencies and medical terminology/phrases.
3 years of Interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting.
