Swedish Health Services Medical Interpreter II - Linguistic Services in Seattle, Washington

Description:

Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Medical Interpreter II for Spanish (1.0 FTE, Day Shift) to work in Linguistic Services at Swedish Shared Services in Seattle, WA.

Provides accurate and impartial on-site spoken language interpretation services requiring advanced proficiency in oral and written English and Spanish native or near native fluency in the language of interpreting. Fluent English pronunciation is required. Professional level medical interpreting and knowledge of medical vocabulary to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and SMC medical personnel to ensure linguistically appropriate care.

In this position you will:

  • Provide interpretation (in person, by telephone or video remote) for LEP patients and SMC medical providers and personnel. Provide Video Remote and telephonic interpretation in a call center environment.

  • Assist in proofreading of translation projects as needed. Translate patient vital documents and medical forms, education materials and patient correspondence as directed in an accurate and timely manner. Review translations of technical terms and medical terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation versions.

  • Help patients to fill out medical and other forms. Provide sight translation (accurate rendition of a written text in one language to an oral message in another language) in the presence of provider and/or other medical staff, checking with patient for comprehension.

  • Facilitate cross-cultural communication through expert explanation and clarification of culture of patient population to ensure culturally appropriate care. Assess patients’ interpretation needs. Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff.

  • Assist LEP patients in accessing services and informs them about SMC policies and procedures. Appropriately direct and guide patients to SMC departments and campuses. Assist limited English proficiency (LEP) patients to access a full range of services available while helping patients to navigate the health care system.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent

  • Certification or screening assessment by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) as a Medical Interpreter, or equivalent (Other U.S. state or national medical interpreter certification, CCHI, NBCMI, MITI test, Language Line Medical Interpreter Skills & Language Assessment, or completion of equivalent evaluation process determined to be acceptable by the Linguistic Services Manager)

  • Renewal of certification or equivalent required by expiration date.

  • One (1) year of interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting

  • Two (2) years experience in translation of English and source language as demonstrated by passing a competency exam and skills assessment

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • Continuing education and/or training preferred in medical interpretation competencies, translation and medical terminology/phrases

  • Professional training in translation or equivalent educ/experience

  • Training and education in translation competencies.

  • Three (3) years of interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting

  • Prior video interpreting experience

  • ATA certification or DSHS Translator Certification
