The General Surgical units are a good place for someone who wants to get acute experience to eventually progress their

career into the ICU. These units see a variety of cases and will allow you to

develop a high level of critical thinking, they are always experiencing something new every day, they have strong team work and see a variety of patients. These units have a high exposure to a lot of surgeries and you will gain broad

experience in a cross section of patient care under the surgical umbrella.

Essential Job Functions:

The job duties listed areessential functions of the position.However, other duties may be assigned, and may also be consideredessential functions of the position. The caregiver must besufficiently fluent in the English language to satisfactorily perform theessential functions of the position. Thedegree of fluency required will vary depending upon the nature of the position. Caregivers are expected tohonor the Mission, Values, Vision and Promise and adhere to the Code ofConduct, policies and standards of their organization. For direct patient care roles: Performs and maintainscurrency of essential competencies as required by specific area of hire andpopulations served.

  • Employs Nursing Professional Practice: Assesses, identifies appropriate nursing diagnoses, plans, implements and evaluates patients’ care. Develops, updates and coordinates the patient’s plan of care to achieve patient goals and to optimize outcomes and transitions across the care continuum. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate. At the completion of the residency, demonstrates competencies in populations served and performs essential competencies as required by specific unit of hire.

  • Advocates: Effectively advocates for ethical and holistic care by partnering in care planning to promote the autonomy, dignity, rights, values and beliefs of those we serve.

  • Facilitates Learning: Fosters a learning environment for patient/families, nursing, and other members of the healthcare team including students; facilitates formal and informal learning for patient/families, nursing, other members of the healthcare team, and community.

  • Aligns Practice with Safety and Quality: Accountable for safety, identifies and corrects problems, and integrates evidence, and best practice into nursing care; uses data and evidence to improve patient outcomes. Aligns patient safety, self-safety and environmental safety as equally important for best outcomes.

  • Engages in Professional Development: Engages in ongoing professional development; practices to the top of license within the legal parameters of the Nurse Practice Act, the Nursing Social Policy Statement, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and specialty standards. Promotes a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates and disseminates research and evidence based practice.

  • Leads in the Practice Setting & Community: Leads and coordinates teams, appropriately delegates, coordinates care and collaborates with others as equal members of the inter-professional care team to integrate nursing knowledge. Models professional behaviors as a representative of the nursing profession.

  • Cohort hiring provides new RNs the opportunity to experience the program in a setting that provides a consistent and structured experience.

  • Integrated classroom and clinical experiences under the guidance and support of Preceptors, Clinical Educators and Professional Development Specialists. Clinical experience is under the direct one on one supervision of a Preceptor.

  • Swedish nurses chose a system-wide professional practice model through a collaborative vote as part of SMC’s Clinical Excellence and Magnet Journey. This journey initiated a new culture of excellence and has enhanced nursing professional practice by fostering nursing autonomy and empowerment.

  • Simulated Clinical Experience with high fidelity mannequins, which offers the opportunity to practice in a safe and educationally structured environment.

  • Residents will experience the real-time consequences of their nursing actions and decisions. A thorough debriefing will enhance the learning experience.

  • At Swedish, we highly value our RN staff and strive to offer numerous professional development opportunities both at the individual level as well as opportunities to participate in shared leadership, our Nursing Quality leadership group, among others.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • RN residents are hired into "orientation" positions/units. Near the end of the orientation phase of residency RN residents are assigned to work on a specific unit and shift. Most RN residents stay on the unit they are oriented to, but if there is no open position on that unit the RN resident will be transferred to a similar unit where a position is open. Most are assigned to 12 hour night shifts.

  • New graduate registered nurses are hired in three cohort groups each year

  • Applications are accepted prior to licensure, but an active RN license is required prior to the start date.

  • Applications are screened by the Human Resources Department.

  • Applicants that successfully meet the requirements of the position will be contacted for a phone interview by the RN Resident Recruiter.

  • Additional in-person interviews will be conducted with the hiring manager and peer interview team for those applicants who are successful in the HR screening process.

Qualifications:

To be considered for the RN Residency Program:

  • You must be a recent graduate nurse or a newly licensed professional RN with less than 6 months of professional experience at the time of your application.

  • Strong preference will be given to graduates of an accredited BSN program.

  • Active Washington State RN license by July 26th, 2019.

  • Willingness to commit to full-time employment for 2 years. Residents sign a 2 year agreement with Swedish.

  • Ability to work evening, night and weekend shifts.

  • The Residency is an intense program and we cannot approve any voluntary time off during the orientation period (estimated 12 weeks to 20 weeks)
