Swedish Medical Center Senior Data Specialist - Medical Oncology in Seattle, Washington


Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Senior Data Specialist (1.0 FTE, Day Shift) to work in Medical Oncology at Swedish First Hill in Seattle, WA.

This position is responsible for creating and maintaining various electronic databases within the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) Program.

In this position you will:

  • Abstract clinical information for entry into internal and external transplant databases as instructed and the data mining of this information as requested

  • Create tables, queries, forms and reports in Microsoft Access, PowerPoint and Excel as needed

  • Coordinate and analyze data and clinical status information of patients referred for HSCT Transplant or Immune Effector Cell Therapy

  • Review medical records for data collection and analyze to meet requirements for necessary forms, completes data entry, initiates and monitors compliance and maintains applicable spreadsheets of all CIBMTR TED forms, research forms, and consents

  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationship with contacts from CIBMTR and data coordinators/peers from other institutions

  • Assist with long term follow up process in collaboration with HSCT Coordinators, APC’s, RN’s

  • Participate in the organization of quality improvement meeting data including morbidity and mortality, engraftment, positive microbial culture results and continuous resource management

  • Provide Education to staff and Physicians related to improvement opportunities in the documentation for both HSCT database and CIBMTR forms

  • Assist in the coordination and preparation for on sites visits and/or RFI (request for information) as received by various accreditation and regulatory agencies

  • Database Maintenance: Manage all aspects of workgroup security, maintain data integrity (including running regular tests to ensure data accuracy), maintain data tables, and ensure redundant backup measures are in place

  • Documentation: Document all critical work processes with clear policies and procedures

  • Assist the department manager and HSCT nurse coordinators as requested

  • Communicate and coordinate information sharing with data and quality management partners at Bloodworks Northwest

  • Coordinate with internal data, quality, and IT colleagues at the SCI and Swedish Medical Center (Syapse, registry, Epic, etc)


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • A bachelor’s degree or 3-5 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience with database management, data reporting, or data analytics within a clinical setting is required

  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology

  • Demonstrated experience utilizing database and data entry skills

  • .Ability to process large amounts of data, stay organized and focused

  • Ability to communicate system needs and process on a one-to-one basis to individuals with varying computer and PC knowledge

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries/complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, team members or other individuals within the hospital system

  • Data entry, process and keyboarding skills

  • Must be a self-directed, independent worker

  • Ability to use diplomacy to problem-solve diverse situations

  • Ability to implement programs working closely with management team and staff

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Able to perform multiple tasks at any one time, set priorities, and manage time effectively

  • .A team player, able to work with all levels of employees in a respectful and supportive way

  • Able to work with high-level professionals in both medical and administrative areas

  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with staff members, information services personnel and others inside and outside the medical center

  • Ability to work in Windows operating environment using Microsoft Office Professional products (Access, Excel, Word)

  • Ability to design and program applications that utilize existing data from a variety of sources, build bridges between applications, manipulate data pulled in from external sources, perform statistical analysis, develop potentially complex management reports, and develop data security strategies

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • A bachelor’s degree with emphasis on medical services preferred
