Swedish Health Services Surgical Technologist - Operating Room/Orthopedic Surgery in Seattle, Washington


$10,000 Sign-On Bonus (Externals Only) and Relocation Available

Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Surgical Technologist (1.0 FTE, DAY SHIFT) to work in Orthopedic Surgery at

Swedish First Hill in Seattle, WA.

The Surgical Technologist (ST) is responsible for facilitating the surgical procedure through the assembly of

instrumentation, equipment and supplies. The Surgical Technologist work as a member of the surgical team under the

supervision of a registered nurse, with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other medical support personnel to provide

patient care in a manner consistent with the mission, vision and values of the Surgical Services department and Swedish

Medical Center.

In this position you will:

  • Serves in the primary scrub role during assigned core procedures. Places equipment and supplies in operating room

and arranges instruments, according to instruction. Maintains supply of fluids and medications labeled and ready for use

during operation. Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks

as directed by surgeon during operation. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and facilitates the progress of the

surgical procedure.

  • Effectively coordinates equipment, supplies and instrumentation according to surgeon’s preference cards. Collaborates

with members of the surgical team in the updating and maintenance of preference cards.

  • Functions competently within multiple specialty areas and serves in a flexible scrub role with minimal notice. Recognizes

age and size of patient as a relevant factor, and applies appropriate skills in preparation for surgical intervention.

  • Assists team members with positioning, moving and transporting patients. Facilitates room turnover, and washing and

sterilization of instruments. Competent in use of washer, autoclaves and Steris.

  • Assists with preparation and draping of patient. Anticipates surgeons needs in supplies and instrumentation. Applies

knowledge of good sterile technique. Collaborates with circulating nurse to up-hold AORN standards as adopted by the

Swedish Medical Center Policies and Procedures. Assists as necessary in holding retractors and cutting sutures.

Case mix Includes:

  • Pediatric, under 6 years old, procedure is done by SOI team in the MAIN OR, over 6 years old, procedure done in SOI-OR

  • Adult and Elderly

  • Specialty: All Total Joints, Foot, Ankle, and hand Surgeries, Spine Surgeries


  • 10 OR Suites

Staffing Includes:

  • RN's, Surgical Tech's, PCA, Charge Nurse, Specialty Charge Nurse's for both Specialty areas, Clinical manager, ST Facilitator, ST Team Lead

  • Other support staffing: Radiology Tech, Anesthesia Techs, SPD aff support for instrumentations, PDC staff-supports specialty instrumentation, implants, and tissue

Scheduling/Hours & Misc.:

  • Week-day Hours of Operation: 7:00AM - 9:30PM // Weekend and Holidays: On call team only, 24 hours coverage

  • Work Shifts: 8 hours, 10 hours, 12 hours

  • On call hours, Weekdays, Weekend, and Holidays

  • Scrubs and PPE provided


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Certificate of completion of a Surgical Technician vocational program or documentation of equivalent training

  • Registration with the Washington State Department of Health as a Surgical Technologist

  • CPR Provider certification

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • National certification by the Liaison Council on Certification for ST

  • Six (6) months experience in a hospital operating room
